"The logo is based on the tartan track that athletes compete on"

The Brief

The Brief for this project was to create a logo for an upcoming event in the Aberdeen area. The event is a sports activity day in which schools from around the city compete and collaborate much like the commonwealth games do.

Rationale

The final logo was the third concept that was worked on for the project and it is based on the tartan track that athletes compete on. The shape of the logo creates a seamless shape forming the AYG letters, reflecting the fact that athletics will be one of the main activities that will be held on the day of the event.

Some of the main inspiration for the logo came from researching the logos from the Commonwealth Games, the Olympic Games and various sports brands, while I also spent time researching the history of Aberdeen, famous people from the area and elements of the city's cultural heritage.

More about the event:

The Aberdeen Youth Games will see around 1,500 pupils take part in a number of projects culminating in a final event which will be held at Aberdeen Sports Village on Friday, 16 May, 2014. The six-month project, which is being run by Robert Gordon University (RGU)’sSport and Exercise Science team and Sport Aberdeen, was launched at Kaimhill Primary School in Garthdee, on Friday, November 15. As part of the initiative, more than 30 second year BSc (Hons) Applied Sports and Exercise students from RGU will receive training in squash, badminton and athletics coaching, and deliver these sports to P4 to P7 pupils across the city as part of their work placements in the New Year.

Below I have included a range of development panels that I used to create and refine the design of the logo.
